Connecticut Sun “Soft Fired” Coach Before Houston Move?

So, in what was a kind of crazy move, the Connecticut Sun have already as good as fired their coach. They have fired their coach. Because Rashid Mazian has signed as the Galatasaray head coach. Which is kind of crazy. And as a Leeds United fan, if you’re a Galatasaray fan, this is not a personal shot at you.

But if you know, you know. As a Leeds United fan, Galatasaray. I need to get that out of the way. Basically, there was a big football game in 2000, the UEFA Cup semi-final, and two Leeds fans got murdered by Galatasaray fans, and Galatasaray still cheer on the people that murdered Leeds fans.

So yeah, that’s kind of where it comes from. Basically, it is a mad one for Rashid Mazian, where he has already signed a job that starts the day they’re knocked out of the WNBA season. It appears that the Houston basketball team, because they may not even legally be allowed to be the Houston Comets, is taking over.

Apparently a famous music artist owns the trademark to the Houston Comets, which is hilarious. But this is a situation where I’m looking at it and thinking I don’t even know what’s going on. This is a decent enough team.

Brittney Griner, Layshia Clarendon, Erica Wheeler, Kennedy Burke, and Nia Coffey. Ironically, this is a pretty decent team he’s got. Especially because I do rate Mazian as a coach. I think he’s a good coach.

We saw it last year where the team was building towards something. So what does this mean for Houston 2027? It means they’ve already told him he’s not coming to Houston.

The rumor is that nobody’s coming to Houston. The entire backroom staff is being left behind. They’re hiring new everything. Everything that’s in Connecticut, nobody’s coming over. The GM, the president, apparently nobody’s coming over.

They’re buying the franchise and essentially treating it like it’s an expansion franchise. Everything’s gone. The Connecticut Sun does not exist. The only thing they will take are rookie contracts.

They’re not even taking the history of the Connecticut Sun. They’re trying to revive the history of the Houston Comets. If you look in the history books, the Connecticut Sun organization will not exist.

Ironically, people will say it’s technically the same franchise because it relocated. But that’s why I hate American sports, even in MLS. If Vancouver isn’t profitable enough, the Whitecaps could move to Vegas because the league doesn’t think it’s a big enough market.

That’s the reason I could never fully be a fan of a team in America. Imagine if Leeds moved from Leeds. Leeds is almost like a second home for me. I know my way around Leeds better than Dublin. I’ve gone there close to 100 times in my life.

My plan years ago was literally to move to Leeds for a year or two before life tied me down to Ireland.

So is this just him seeing the writing on the wall with Houston ownership taking over? No. They’ve told him it’s over. Everything he’s been building towards for the last two seasons is not even going to come to fruition.

They are just stealing a team. The front office is gone. Everything is gone.

How is this going to work? He’s fired. He’s done at the end of the year.

Houston’s going to fire Rashid before his plan comes to fruition. He’s probably getting paid good money to coach Galatasaray, maybe 300k or 400k a year.

Could he coach both franchises? We can be real here. This is a soft firing. He has been fired.

They’ve basically told him they’re done with him. Not just him. Almost certainly anything directly related to the Connecticut Sun is gone.

Nothing connected to the Connecticut Sun will be brought over. By the looks of things, the only things they will take are rookie contracts. They are an expansion team without an expansion draft.

That is the way they are treating it. They wanted an expansion team and didn’t get it, so they stole a franchise from the state of Connecticut.

The league did not even allow them to sell it to Connecticut. An owner that wanted to buy the team and keep it exactly where it was would have been told no.

They were not allowed to keep the team in Connecticut. They were not allowed to keep the team near Connecticut in Boston.

This is one of the scummiest things the league has done. But that’s the problem with American sports leagues. It’s the reason why when people ask me what team I’m a fan of, I say I’m a fan of the Miami Heat, but if the Miami Heat lose, I couldn’t care less.

At any given time, your team can just up and leave. Maybe the Miami Heat won’t, but any team can.

At any given time, your team can randomly decide they want to lose. Anything can happen.

That’s the reason why I dislike the franchise system rather than community-based teams that built their way up and became powerhouses.

Maybe it’s just the way I look at sports. Either way, almost certainly the Connecticut Sun coach has been fired.

I would say with near certainty he will be fired at the end of the season. It would be a shock if he is not.

And if he somehow still has a job next season, I genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen because the Galatasaray season ends mid-training camp.
