So, with the Indiana Fever deciding that they are not going to sign any more centers, is it time to do the unthinkable? Is it time to do the unthinkable? And bring back Liz Cambage. We have to discuss it. The Indiana Fever are so screwed size-wise that we have to discuss it. I understand this is out there. I understand this is crazy, and I understand the answer is probably no. What do you think? Or is there some weird chance that Liz Cambage might improve this roster?
Who is Liz Cambage? Liz Cambage is 34 years old, will be 35 this year. She is a 6’7, 6’8 big who in her last WNBA season averaged 15.8 points per game, which was in 2022. So, four years ago, she averaged 15.8. She said that she was not going to play in the WNBA until they start playing million-dollar contracts, and she is currently not in the WNBA. However, I mean this when I say this, somebody big at some stage is going to sign her.
So, this year in the Chinese league, she averaged 19 points per game for Sichuan, who are one of the biggest teams in the Chinese league. Natasha Howard played on that team as well. Natasha Howard averaged 16 points per game. Cambage averaged 19 points per game, and Cambage only played a couple of games. Sichuan were third place in the Chinese league.
I am going to be real here. There are no young bigs right now, and if Liz Cambage wants to get that million-dollar contract, with the way they are paying bigs, all she has to do is have one good season, and someone will pay her a million dollars to play in the WNBA. Yes, I understand she has at times been a locker room cancer. That being said, the Las Vegas Aces signed her as kind of a vet big when A’ja Wilson was first coming through, and it seemed to work out well there.
We now have a situation where the Indiana Fever just do not have a backup. The Indiana Fever literally do not have a backup. Surely someone is going to take the chance on Liz Cambage. Because I do not know, is the goal for the Indiana Fever to have good vibes or win a title? Vibes can get you so far. They nearly got them to the finals last year. But they would have been eaten alive by the Phoenix Mercury. They would have been eaten alive by that team.
Vibes work until you have a complete mismatch, which the Mercury were a mismatch, as were the New York Liberty last year. The reason why they said no chance without Caitlin Clark against certain teams is because they cannot deal with size. It is why they struggled so badly against the Los Angeles Sparks. They cannot deal with it size-wise.
I do not know if Liz Cambage is the actual answer. She is probably not. I do not even know if Liz Cambage would consider coming back to the WNBA. She probably would not. But the Indiana Fever need to do whatever they can to sign some form of another big. There has got to be some sort of a big, because if the Indiana Fever do not go out and get another big, it is Aliyah Boston and Damiris Dantas.
Damiris Dantas is not good enough to be the only backup big for the Indiana Fever. She is just not. KK Timson is not good enough. KK Timson is not smart enough. Her feel for the game is not there. Myisha Hines-Allen, our hopes and dreams lie on Myisha Hines-Allen remembering that she used to be an All-WNBA player one time. That is literally it. We have to hope that she can get that form while being a role player in limited minutes.
I have no idea what the Indiana Fever can do. Bringing Liz Cambage might be one of the dumbest things I have ever suggested, but they have to do something. If they do not do anything, what are we talking about for the Fever? The fifth seed? A fourth seed? Fighting for the four-five seed?
For people saying the Fever can be better than the Mercury, based on what? The Mercury lost Satou. You do realize Satou at one stage was benched for an entire game for conduct detrimental to the team. She was getting DNPs. She walked away from the team at one stage, and it really affected them. Alyssa Thomas got injured, and they were still winning games. The Mercury have a system. They replaced Satou with Val Wia Yi, who is not that much worse. They brought in a lot of really good players from overseas. They are going to get some good rookies this year.
They are going to be really good. The Atlanta Dream are a better regular season team than the Fever. The Liberty, obviously. If Napheesa Collier is healthy, I do not know if the Fever are better than the Minnesota Lynx. I do not know if they are better than the Sparks. I think they are better than the Chicago Sky. They should be better than the Sky. They are definitely better than the Dallas Wings.
With Ezi Magbegor coming back, she looks like a phenom. If she was in this year’s draft, she would be the number one pick. She is 20 years old. The Storm were already one game behind the Fever last year.
Every team relies on health, but no team relies on health more than the Fever. If Aliyah Boston goes down for five games, I do not see how the Fever do any better than one and four. They might beat a tanking team without her, but that is it. They are much better equipped this year without Caitlin Clark, but it feels like their whole free agency was working off the assumption that Caitlin Clark is going to get injured, and that Aliyah Boston cannot get injured because she never misses games.
I have no idea what is going on here. At this stage, why not just try to sign Liz Cambage?
